What is the New Ford V8 Engine?

F-Series

Heavy Duty Integrity

Ford is a company that has developed a strong reputation through its wide array of vehicles, more specifically through their muscle cars and pickup trucks. The most popular vehicles in the Ford lineup of models have typically utilized V8 engine technology, so it goes hand-in-hand to explain that Ford is well-known for its V8 engines as well.

As with previous years, Ford has developed a new powerful V8 engine that will be used in many future Ford models. However, the new 7.3-liter engine is more than an ordinary V8 engine, it is an engine that utilizes pushrods. Pushrod technology, also known as overhead valve technology, quickly lost popularity towards the end of the twentieth century due to its inefficiencies.

The Decision

The new 7.3-liter V8 engine is not the first pushrod engine that Ford has ever built. Ford began using overhead valve engines in their models during the 1950s but later switched to several other different layouts in lieu of the pushrod engine. The popular 5.0-liter V8 engine in the Ford Mustang utilizes an overhead-camshaft design as do many other vehicles in the modern-day automotive market.

Ford designed the new 2020 Ford Super Duty with a pushrod engine to preserve the truck's fuel economy. The design of the overhead valve engine allows for the 7.3-liter V8 to produce peak power while the engine is spinning in the lower RPM range. Trucks that tow heavy loads tend to utilize the lower RPM range, so the new pushrod engine design is complementary to its application.

Inefficiencies

The 7.3-liter V8 engine's pushrod design is a great fit for its application. However, the design would not be best for vehicles, like the Ford Mustang, that operate in higher RPM ranges. Additionally, the engine's cast-iron material design makes it much heavier than other engines that most commuter cars can use.
