One of the biggest things car shoppers look for in their next new car is cabin quietness, especially from wind noise when driving. To help refine the quietness of their cabins, Ford is using new wind tunnel technology that can test how quiet, or not so quiet, a cabin is when hit with winds up to 80 mph.
“This project was born from a desire to be the best when it comes to controlling and limiting the cabin noise customers are so sensitive to,” said Bill Gulker, Ford wind noise core supervisor. “And our new mobile wind tunnel saves our engineers time and increases productivity. It’s a fine example of the innovation mindset we’re trying to incorporate into everything we do.”
The new wind tunnel system will work by identifying noise problems early on in production of the vehicle so that they can be corrected more easily. This means that future Ford cars will sport even more refined and quiet cabins that buyers will flock to.
“Now, we’re able to detect even the most subtle noises,” added Gulker. “We can identify an area in need of improvement, have key people gather, communicate quickly, and resolve the issue without delay.”
